Working hard has some issues
Working hard became weaponized against us. We can clearly see that in the negative responses to “lazy girl jobs”. Some included: “Women don’t want to work anymore”, “What’s wrong with being a Girlboss?”, “How will you get ahead with this mindset?”, etc…
The cool thing is going above and beyond is a choice we get to chose. A lot of misconceptions are that I am teaching people to be lazy. I won’t act dumb to why this assumption could be made, it’s from the headline reading the word “lazy”.
I am not against working hard. But it is not something to be excepted by our jobs. Working over time has consequences to you. It takes up your personal time and it increases your stress. So there better be a value exchange for it.
A real life example:
You are on a team that recently got reduced via some recent layoffs. You and your coworkers who survived the cut are responsible for picking up the work of your laid off colleagues. You are immediately repulsed by the idea.
Your boss says to you one or a few of these “motivating” statements:
I know it’s stressful, but if you put in good effort over the coming months I will be able to put in a good word during performance rasies.
This is a temporary measure and more staff will be backfilled when the budget allows.
We’re a team.
These “benefits” your boss is revealing to you are not guaranteed. At both companies I worked for, I got burned twice by believe this. That’s 2-2. The first one actually cut my salary while doing the work of multiple people with the reasoning being I should be happy I am not getting laid off (this was in 2020). The second one a year in said raises were not available due to economic factors (this was in 2022).
So by now maybe you’re asking me “if we can’t work hard for a handshake agreement on a raise at some mysterious point in the future, why should we work hard?” Let’s talk about it.
When you should work hard
Remember it boils down to choice. If you have the choice to work hard and chose it, that’s amazing. The great thing about lazy girl jobs is we have the space to work hard if we chose to and to not if we do not chose to.
If you are being pressured into working hard, that’s not lazy girl job vibes. You don’t have freedom in that situation. That’s a toxic work environment.
Here are the reasons I ever chose to work hard:
✨ You genuinely want to work hard (and you're not pressured to want to)
✨ You have a plan on how to leverage that hard work
✨ You have a unique opportunity that isn't available anywhere else currently
✨ There's a clear return on the investment for you
Why I Work Hard
I get asked sometimes if being a content creator is a “lazy girl job”. To most people no. It is a stressful, competitive business. I am happy and I do love what I do, but I don’t think I would ever recommend this as a “lazy girl job”. Although if you do want to be one, I one thousand percent recommend it and support that decision!
I had a lazy girl job to teach myself how to be where I am now. I am forever grateful of those times and feel so passionately about the ripple effect created by this mindset. That’s why I share about with you now everyday!
I chose to devote my whole life to the future of work.
In short: There are moments to work hard and those moments are dependent on what you get out of it. If there is no clear benefit of going above and beyond, let’s focus on life outside of work.
