Today I shared my mindset around leaving my comfy lazy girl job 2 years ago to do this full time. You can watch the short clip on LinkedIn or my Instagram post below:
Thriving as an Employee in Capitalism
Yes, capitalism is designed for employers success over the employee. Also, there are cheat codes to similar successes as a worker.
Capitalism runs on opportunity cost which means every choice you make comes at the expense of what you didn’t choose.
As an employee, your goal is to minimize opportunity cost and maximize your reward. Just like a business owner does!
If you ignore this, you’re more likely to be underpaid, overworked, or stuck in a role that no longer serves you.
That’s what exploitation often looks like in today’s capitalism: staying too long, settling for less, and missing out on better options.
So, How Do We Know When to Walk Away?
It’s time to quit when the cost of staying is greater than the discomfort of leaving.
In other words: when the damage of staying in your current job outweighs the stress of finding a new one, your opportunity cost is too high. And it’s costing you more than you realize….
That said, I know quitting isn’t easy. Changing jobs means giving up momentum, relationships, and the comfort of what’s familiar. And yes, there’s always a risk the next job might not be better. But there’s also a chance it could be so much more. When you’ve been stuck in a bad job for too long, you can forget what better even looks like. You start to believe the bare minimum is all you deserve.
Working Like a Business Owner
Here are just a few takeaways to simplify the analysis paralysis of working a 9-5:
Always make sure you have leverage
Reduce opportunity cost
Reflect on and reduce all chances of exploitation when possible
